Allegorical
Fiction in the form of extended metaphor in which objects, person, and actions are equated with meanings that lie outside the narrative itself. Includes Fantasy (fiction that contains a conscious breaking free from reality and the work takes place in a nonexistent and unreal world or concerns incredible or unreal characters).
Light of Eidon by Karen Hancock is one example of an Allegorical Fiction novel.
Contemporary
Fiction whose characters, settings, and issues are within the context of the current time period (1950 - to the present).
The Redemption of Sara Cain, the Movie Edition is an excellent example of Contemporary Fiction.
Futuristic
Fiction whose action, plot, and characters occur in a future period of time. Includes Apocalyptic (fiction which anticipates the ultimate destiny of the world, usually containing the characteristics of catastrophe and dreadful final judgment) and Science Fiction (fiction in which scientific facts or hypotheses form the basis of adventures, often in the future, on other planets, or in other dimensions of time).
Offworld by Robin Parrish is a prime example of Futuristic Fiction.
Historical
Fiction that weaves stories about characters in historical epochs or settings. Includes biblical (fiction focusing on Bible characters, settings, or time periods, and biographical (fiction containing imaginative developments of incidents and qualities of an actual person).
Example: The Winds of Autumn by Janette Oke.
Juvenile Fiction
Fiction aimed at 13-15 year olds where characters encounter everyday experiences that are relevant to this age group.
The SummerHill Secrets from Bev Lewis is a great example of Young Adult Fiction.
Romance
Fiction whose characters and controlling theme focus on a romantic drama in a historical or current setting.
There are many examples of Romantic Fiction, Beguiled by J. Mark Bertrand and Deeanne Gist is one of them.
Suspense
Fiction that often focuses on a strange, frightening, or thrilling set of events. Includes Mystery (fiction where the element of mystery or terror plays a controlling part, often a tale of crime).
Hunter's Moon by Don Hoesel is a prime example of Suspense Fiction.
Western
Fiction set in the frontier of North America and dealing with the adventurous lives of frontiersmen, Native Americans, scouts, and cowboys in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Fountain Creek Chronicles by Tamera Alexander is one example of Western Fiction.
